Over 50 civil society organisations wrote to Sir Suma Chakrabarti, president of the EBRD, expressing their expectations and concerns regarding the ongoing revision of the bank’s energy policy. This open letter is another signal – after a successful petition, calling on the bank to quit coal – that the people are watching the EBRD and expect a considerable change in the bank’s energy lending. However, the current draft Energy Sector Strategy clearly lacks vision and strategic goals. We call for a shift away from fossil fuels and a complete stop on coal lending, like the World Bank, Agence française de Developpement and the European Investment Bank have committed to.
