The REPowerEU investment plan is set to spark a wave of LNG terminals and pipelines across Europe. This risks locking Europe into burning gas for decades when the EU’s own climate laws state that gas consumption must be drastically reduced by 2030.

Counter Balance members ReCommon and Observatori del Deute en la Globalització (ODG) will examine what short-sighted LNG investments made under REPowerEU could mean in the Recovery and Gas at Full Throttle webinar at 17:30-19:00 on Wednesday 15 March. We will focus on Italy, Spain and Germany and will also explore alternatives which should take priority.

Speakers:

  • Elena Gerebizza, Researcher and Energy and Infrastructure Campaigner at ReCommon: REPowerEU and the relaunch of the gas agenda: The case of Italy;
  • Josep Nualart Corpas, Researcher at ODG: Spain as a “Gas Hub”? Risks and grassroots alternatives;
  • Julian Schwartzkopff, Senior expert for energy and environment at Deutsche Umwelthilfe: Environmental impacts of new LNG terminals. The case of Germany;
  • Eva Pastorelli, CEE Bankwatch Network (moderator)
